Penn and Teller – Fool Us is a magic competition television show where magicians perform tricks in front of American veteran duo Penn & Teller. Its initial two seasons were hosted capably by Jonathan Ross, and the second season by the Fool Us Hostess Alyson.
Each episode starts off with the introduction stating the main purpose of the show. Penn & Teller come out and sit down at the center stage. They watch the hopeful performers perform their acts before them, in front of an audience of live viewers. Following each performance, Penn & Teller privately confer while the host interviews the magicians. Penn & Teller then reveal whether they are aware of how the trick was executed, typically using cryptic language or recording the technique and presenting it privately to the magicians for confirmation, the method, in order to avoid approaching public disclosure of the methods behind the trick.

Fool Us was filmed at Fountain Studios in London, England (season one) as well as the Penn and Teller Theatre in Las Vegas (season two onward). After each performance, if Penn & Teller cannot figure out how a trick was done, and the magician(s) who performed the trick get a Fool Us trophy and a five-star trip for a trip to Las Vegas to perform as the opening act in Penn & Teller’s show which is also held at the Rio Hotel & Casino.

Teller says that the doublespeak is a way to teach people new tricks without compromising the trick. Should Penn & Teller are wrong or are unable to find out the method used to perform the trick, the magician wins the Fool Us trophy and the possibility of performing at one of Penn & Teller’s Las Vegas shows. A backstage judge who is knowledgeable about the art of magic business and intimately aware of how the trick is performed ahead of the event, makes necessary calls whether Penn & Teller were properly fooled. At the end of each episode, Penn & Teller perform the magic trick of their own.
In the initial season, Jonathan Ross served as a temporary replacement for Penn and Teller’s hosting duties, but they returned for the next season.
The film was shot at Fountain Studios in London, England during its initial season, before moving to Penn & Teller Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada for its second season and subsequent seasons.
The illusionists presenting tricks in Penn & Teller “Fool Us” are usually accomplished sleight-of-hand artists and illusionists. They usually make it more difficult to understand the trick by performing in near darkness or by causing distraction with conversation or sounds.

From season three onwards, the top performers of the season who have successfully fooled Penn and Teller are invited back for an exclusive episode on Fool Us in which they each get the chance to show off their tricks again and try to fool Penn and Teller for an additional $15000 prize.
While they are taciturn and still throughout the course during the performance, Penn and Teller will communicate with one with subtle gestures. They may also communicate with the magician who is performing and ask them to repeat an move or to provide additional information.
